We wanted to make our anniversary get-away special. Our friends, Dave and Barb, suggested Breakers in Cobourg, Ontario. Private sandy beach, minutes to downtown shopping and restaurants, modern non-smoking motel rooms, some with fireplaces, and housekeeping cottages.

We booked a weekend online and enjoyed time away. It is the other side of Toronto on the edge of Lake Ontario. The beach, lighthouse and docks are just steps away. The downtown core reminds me of my hometown of Preston small and quaint, the pamphlets said the people are very friendly, and they were right.

We visited the tourist information and I said to Linda wouldn’t it be neat if I could rent a bike. Lo and behold, I could! Linda’s idea of getting away is to sit in the shade and read a book. She is well organized and great to have around, especially organizing holiday trips. My idea of getting away would be walking or riding around and shooting photos.

I departed.

I rented the bike for a day and hit the road. I tried riding along any road that took me along Lake Ontario -- that was short-lived. I was forced to ride along old Highway 2, then I came upon a scenic route that brought me back along Lake Ontario. I caught up to some other bikers and we had great time. I asked how far they were going and they said a little past Colbourne. In Colbourne, they had blocked the main road for a street party with a tractor race. The winner was whoever had the slowest moving tractor.

I asked my new friends how far we had travelled? 30 kilometres about. I had to turn back and drive into the slight wind. I had no money but my camera. They watched my bike as I went in restaurant to use the washroom. They gave me the rest of their trail mix; I will forever be grateful to them.

I took my time returning to the motel and was just a little exhausted. The Jacuzzi tub came in handy when I got back. I’m not a story writer but like to share great experiences with others. If you try Breakers out, tell them Imagebob suggested them.
